[송오현의 스마트 잉글리쉬] There is a town in California named after my great-great grandfather

A: There is a town in California named after my great-great grandfather.
B: Was it one of those towns that sprung up during the gold rush?
A: Yes. Unfortunately, now it‘s just a desolate ghost town.
A: California에 우리 증조할아버지의 이름을 딴 마을이 있어.
B: 골드러시 동안에 생겨난 마을들 중 하나였어?
A: 맞아, 유감스럽지만 지금은 그저 황량한 유령마을일 뿐이야. 

desolate는 형용사로서 ‘황량한’ ‘적막한’ ‘고적한’이라는 사전적 의미를 가지고 있다. 어원은 ‘쓸쓸한’ ‘고독한’ ‘황폐해진’ 등의 뜻을 가진 라틴어 desolatus에서 유래했으며 유사한 표현으로는 privateness, isolation, remoteness 등이 있다.
