A: Did you know that Thomas Jefferson had slaves?

B: Didn’t he write the Declaration of Independence?

A: Yes, but he had slaves and he even had children with some of the female slaves.

B: I wonder if they were manumitted when he died.

A: Thomas Jefferson이 노예를 소유했다는 거 알고 있었어?

B: 그가 독립선언문을 쓰지 않았어?

A: 맞아, 하지만 그는 노예를 소유했었고 심지어 여성 노예 중 일부와 아이도 가졌지.

B: 난 그가 죽은 후에 노예들이 해방됐는지 아닌지 궁금해.

 

manumit은 ‘노예농노를 해방(석방)하다’라는 의미다.
